As bewildering as it is to observe the chief executive try to upend the traditional concept about democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there is one large group among Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we were raised with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they transformed an image of compassion into an icon of hate who blesses specifically the brutality that he denounced in the Gospel; this change developed more slowly, through multiple decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless unsettling in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Christ from my childhood, because theoretically Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and since the rapidly expanding group within America might have little sense about him since they are non-believers or doubters or nones. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with different religions; however I believe that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in the Christian story.

The apparent and clear truth that Christ in biblical accounts calls for a form of profound affection focused on the needy has perpetually caused the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: attractive to the general public, but because of its inherent radicalness requiring to be restrained. In the 1950s it was contained by dilution – Protestantism was so prevalent that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Conflict for the Best Within Us
Hence I have become heartened to see the determined opposition to Trump emerge in this past year. It has provided substantial consolation to participate in developing the movement that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged voters to show up in numbers in the off-year elections. We must have to persist with it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags during all protests and requests to the best parts in US history.
We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the stranger? Did you receive him and embrace them or refuse?
The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, through connection to the highest within national tradition, exactly as the Christian faith is optimally secured by reference to that which renders it unique and wonderful, particularly the pattern of Jesus. In neither case does it imply feigning the most negative about the nation and Christian faith never occurred; it means both modesty and belief, a combination that genuine American Christians should be comfortable with.
