European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
