Colombia's President Says 'I Will Resort to Weapons Once More' should US Intervenes Militarily.

The US President along with President Gustavo Petro have intensified the rhetoric of their exchange, further raising strains bilaterally after US forces attacked Venezuela to remove Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He runs drug factories and production sites and his time is running out," Trump remarked.

Growing Threats coupled with Allegations

Talking to journalists over the weekend, Trump suggested comparable use of force against Colombia, asserting Colombia faces serious problems and “run by a problematic figure who enjoys creating the drug and distributing it to the US."

While Colombia is the world’s largest producer of cocaine, there is no evidence that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way tied to the trade.

A Frayed Partnership

This nation for decades served as a staunch collaborator of the US in the campaign against drug trafficking and benefited from wide political approval in Washington, however, the relationship have worsened significantly after Trump assumed the presidency.

Its illicit drug economy is predominantly run by criminal organizations including one major cartel, the ELN guerrilla group and dissident factions of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), most of its former fighters disbanded after a landmark accord.

Colombia's Strong Rebuttal

When asked if a military operation similar to Venezuela was a possibility for Colombia, Trump responded: "I like the sound of that from my perspective."

President Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who left armed struggle in the last century, rejected these allegations. "I am no an illegitimate leader and I am not a drug trafficker," he stated.

"Trump speaks without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he wrote online.

"If they [the US] bomb civilians, they will transform into thousands of guerrillas in the mountains. And if they detain the nation's leader, which a significant portion of Colombians admires and supports, they will release the ‘jaguar’ of the nation," Petro warned.

From Fighter to Statesman

Petro spent a period in his early life participating in the left-wing M-19 armed organization but is not believed to have ever participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he took part in writing the constitutional rewrite over three decades ago and eventually served as an influential politician. He held the office of mayor of Bogotá before winning president.

"I pledged not to touch arms again ... but in defense of my country I shall resume the fight," he said.

Reinforced Protection along with Cross-Political Opposition

The Colombian defence minister reported that the president’s protection team had received additional support.

Several members of Colombia’s conservative opposition have allied themselves with Trump, yet figures from all sides of the ideological divide have rejected the notion of American military action on Colombia.

Bilateral and Economic Strains

The US revoked the president's entry visa subsequent to he urged US troops to disobey unlawful commands. Later, in October, it placed asset freezes targeting Petro, his spouse and a number of close collaborators.

Simultaneously as the US increased its military presence near Venezuela and striking alleged narcotics traffickers to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets have also conducted operations against vessels in Pacific waters adjacent to Colombia.
